Prenatal Care
Our midwives prepare each new mom by discussing their options for prenatal care and the birth of their baby. They provide scientific, evidence-based information that can assist you in outlining a care plan for your pregnancy and delivery experience.
As a result of this personal attention, which starts immediately upon meeting with your midwife, you will be better prepared for childbirth.
Midwives are well known for suggesting different pain management positions and techniques, which can delay or eliminate the need for pain medication, like an epidural. However, if pain medication is part of your birth plan, then you should know that our midwives are supportive of your coping needs as well.
With your midwife’s guidance, you can:
- Understand how your body is naturally equipped for childbirth and increase your confidence in your ability to give birth
- Prepare your mind and body for childbirth; for example, you and your midwife will discuss ways to practice relaxation
- Understand which experiences throughout your pregnancy are normal and when to seek medical care
- Make informed healthcare decisions for you and your baby
Midwifery Care During Labor & Delivery
We provide a unique midwifery care experience, as our midwives are part of the care team at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo. Childbirth in a hospital setting allows mothers to benefit from our care, while offering an excellent support system of nursing staff, hospital amenities, and access to social services.
Our certified nurse midwives have all previously graduated from nursing school prior to advancing their careers in midwifery. Should medical needs arise for mom and baby, dedicated OB/GYN physicians and neonatologists are on hand to provide additional surgical care or medical services.
Many midwives delivering at Mercy Hospital are also trained to assist in a cesarean delivery, whether scheduled or in emergent situations. Our midwives’ advanced clinical skills enable them to remain at your side as an active part of your care team no matter the circumstances.
Postpartum & Newborn Care
We follow-up with each mom after delivery both in and outside the hospital. During your hospital stay, you can expect a daily visit from your midwife.
Our midwives often offer guidance on breastfeeding, handling anxiety and improving nutrition and exercise. She can also give insight into the emotional changes that happen when you become a parent for the first time or add another child to the family.
Postpartum appointments are scheduled, following your return home, to ensure your physical and emotional well-being.
